Hot or Cold Mirror: Hot and cold mirrors are used to separate the infrared radiation (heat) from the visible part of the spectrum. These mirrors are extensively used in optical systems which are temperature sensitive, since most of the incident energy is either transmitted of reflected with minimal absorption. Hot mirror perform as the name states; hot mirrors reflect the heat and transmit visible light. All of the coatings are classified as hard, first-surface dielectric and will meet or exceed the specified humidity and abrasion specifications. To prevent cracking or crazing from high heat application, all coatings are deposited onto a low expansion material such as borosilicate.
Cold Mirror is the inverse of the Hot mirror. Cold mirror reflects the visible and transmits the infrared. The coatings are all first-surface variety and like the hot mirrors, are also deposited onto low expans material suc as borosilicate. Cold mirrors are usually used at a 45º angle of incidence in randomly polarized light.
